Getting started with Motability...

The Motability Scheme provides disabled people with the opportunity to use their mobility allowance in order to lease a new car. The first step is to make an application, specifying any adaptations required that are unique to you and your requirements. If you're unable to drive, you can name up to two drivers on your application. A third driver can also be listed for an additional charge. They must all live within five miles of your address, and hold full driving licences. Drivers should typically be over 25 – one person under 21 can be named, but they must live with you. Depending on the model, you may need to make an Advance Payment before your contract begins, but many models are available with zero deposit payable up front. Higher equipment levels and larger vehicles are more likely to be subject to an Advance Payment.

Motability contracts last for three years, and your benefits are used to make payments on the vehicle. In some cases, for smaller and budget cars you may not need to pay out the entire benefit amount. These payments cover the costs of annual road tax, insurance, routine servicing and maintenance, windscreen or tyre replacements and breakdown assistance. The term acts similarly to a vehicle leasing agreement. At the end of the contract, if you are still entitled to a Motability car, you can return the vehicle you have and enjoy a brand new one.
