How to check your tyre tread

As the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, your tyres are among the most important components of your car. Not only should they offer the correct tyre pressure to ensure efficient and safe motoring at all times, but they should provide a level of tyre tread that is both road legal and which will provide the utmost peace of mind throughout your travels.

At South West Nissan, we’re pleased to be able to provide you with all the advice you need to monitor the condition of your tyre tread and ensure that you’ll always be taking to the roads with tyres that are in prime condition.

What is the legal tyre tread depth?

The UK and European tyre tread depth is currently 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. With a potential £2,500 fine per tyre, ensuring that you are meeting this minimum requirement is essential. In fact, many manufacturers recommend changing your tyres before the tread depth drops below 3mm, thereby ensuring that you will not be subject to any potential penalties.

Checking your tyres

Checking the tread depth on your tyres is a quick and easy job - and one which costs you no more than 20p. To be precise, all you simply need is a 20p piece which can be inserted into the tread grooves of your tyres. If you are unable to see the outer rim of the 20p coin, your tyre tread meets regulations; if, however, you can, you are due replacements.

Checking your tyre tread is a quick and easy job that should be conducted on a frequent basis. Of course, if you’d like for a team of aftersales professionals to inspect them on your behalf, we at South West Nissan will be happy to help.
