Most motorists know that keeping their car’s routine maintenance up to date is essential for long-term performance. But when was the last time your cambelt was changed?
The cambelt, or timing belt, is an essential part of your vehicle, as it keeps all the engine’s components working together. It’s made of rubber, so naturally it deteriorates over time and needs to be replaced periodically. Neglecting this basic aspect of maintenance could result in engine damage, which in turn incurs costly repairs, or even a new engine.
At South West Nissan, we recommend changing your cambelt every five years or 90,000 miles, whichever comes first. This ensures it is replaced before the rubber breaks down and causes further damage.
Often there will be no indication that your cambelt needs changing, as if you adhere to manufacturer recommendations, it will be replaced before the materials get too worn. Indications of a deteriorated belt, however, include issues with starting your car and a loud rattling, squealing or grinding noise when the car is running. This noise is at its worst when the engine first starts, as the components are cold.
